  • Cyber-attacks

Cyber-attacks are one of the unfortunate realities of doing business today. Given the profile and widespread use of our products, Delaware Business Systems, Inc. (“DBS”), along with other leading point-of-sale providers across the country, have recently attracted attention from cyber attackers.  Within the last three weeks, DBS’ security team was alerted to sophisticated attacks, involving the illegal access of customer information.  Federal investigative agencies, including the Secret Service, have been working on this attack and will continue to do everything possible to identify and hold responsible the persons who have perpetrated this unlawful act.

Our internal investigation indicates that the attackers possibly accessed some customer credit card information. We deeply regret that this incident occurred. We’re working diligently internally, as well as with external partners (including Visa and various credit card processors) and Federal law enforcement, to address the incident. We’re taking the following steps:

    • Proactively contacting every site that processes credit cards with DBS to ensure Anti-virus software is updated and running
    • DBS is transitioning to a new remote access method that will require the end-user to be in front of their server to authenticate connections to the system for support
    • Proactively updating POS and Windows account passwords at existing sites that process credit cards
    • DBS is researching and beta-testing end-to-end encrypted card swipes and if testing is successful in our various POS platforms, we will adopt this as standard hardware on all new installations. We will also be able to retro-fit existing clients that have upgraded to the latest PCI-approved platforms and operating systems.
    • Providing a comprehensive list of DBS clients to Visa to assist with early fraud detection for any sites that may have been compromised.

The most common attack at this time has been named "Backoff" by the Department of Homeland Security in a release dated 7/31/2014. You can view the full release by clicking on "READ MORE" at the bottom of this article.

If you have a client who feels their credit card data has been compromised, please instruct them to contact the cards issuing bank to have a new card supplied immediately.

We value the trust of our customers.  We will work aggressively to reduce the risk of these types of events from occurring in the future.  Again, we deeply regret any inconvenience this may cause you.  If you would like additional information, please contact Bob Driscoll in DBS Client Services at services@dbs4pos.com or 302-395-0900 x110

    Featured Installation:
Roaming Raven, Newark, Delaware – Ashby Management
    http://www.theroamingraven.com/

Bob Ashby has a good business sense when it comes to hospitality. His Ashby Management Group has been successful with the McGlynns Pubs, Deer Park and Cantwell’s Tavern. They continue to expand in the region.

DBS supports the point of sale systems and Digital Dining software at all of the Ashby properties. When Bob decided to explore the merits of a mobile food truck he contacted DBS when it came to tracking sales, food cost and credit card processing remotely from the food truck.

Bob and his son, Marc, have an entirely different venture in 2014 and have added a twist to their hospitality offering.

Along comes the Roaming Raven.  This food truck was custom made off the chassis of a Freightliner truck. The intrepid traveling kitchen comes equipped with a DBS installed mobile tablet POS system, deep fryer and a flat top grill, refrigerator and freezer.

The installation of the Digital Dining Mobile HP Tablet will provide real time reporting and credit card processing via the mobile app. Although most items on the menu are priced around $5.00, the ability to accept credit cards gives them the flexibility to accept credit and debit cards in this cashless society. Look for a smart phone electronic mobile wallet soon!

Microsoft officially ended support for Windows XP SP3 on April 8th, 2014. This does mean you (as a merchant processing credit card transactions through your Point-of-Sale system) should take action, if you haven't already!

All merchants and any entity processing, transmitting or storing cardholder data are required by the card associations (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express) and their acquiring banks to adhere to the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS). PCI DSS Requirements 6.1 and 6.2 address the need to keep systems up to date with security patches in order to protect systems from vulnerabilities. With the end-of-life to Windows XP, security patches may not be available and the requirements not met.
